Ensuring the safety of the electrical supply is critical where water and electricity are in close proximity. The engineer will ensure that the electrical supply and wiring are undamaged, that the surge protector is functioning and test the battery back-up system, if fitted.
Inspections are carried out to ensure that all mechanical components are functioning as designed, including checking that the float switch triggers the pump automatically, ensuring that the check valve is working, and also that the impeller is running freely.
Sump pumps inevitably sit in exposed locations and the water that is discharged tends to contain debris, so it’s essential that the sump basin and the impeller are cleared of debris and cleaned thoroughly to ensure their ongoing effectiveness.
Finally, it’s critical to ensure that the discharge pipe, which carries water away from the property, is flowing efficiently and is not blocked or damaged. The engineer will also confirm that any vents are clear of debris.

Many factors determine the optimal timing for your sump pump servicing. For example, the likelihood of limescale build-up, the frequency of use, the volume of water discharged and the amount of debris likely to be introduced into the system.
If we’ve installed your system, we’ll be able to determine a service frequency, or we can assess other systems and offer recommendations. Typically, the interval will be 6 months or 12 months depending on the installation environment and the demands made on your system.
New installations may need more frequent visits for sump pump servicing to ensure that the system is performing to the original design specification. Battery back-up systems to cope with mains power outages are now commonplace with new installations, but you might want to consider a retrofit of this capability if you have an older system.
Aside from regular sump pump servicing, you can help to maintain your system by keeping areas around equipment clean and tidy, and by carrying out visual checks during periods of heavy rain.
